GARDAÍ HAVE launched an investigation after a man was left critically ill following an assault in the early hours of yesterday morning in Co Leitrim.

The victim, who is in his 30s, was discovered by members of the public with serious head injuries in the Townparks area of Carrick-on-Shannon at 3.30am.

The emergency services were alerted and the man was taken to Sligo General Hospital.

Garda sources said he had sustained serious head injuries after apparently being subjected to a serious assault and left unconscious by his attacker.

The area was sealed off overnight and underwent a forensic examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.

Gardaí in Carrick-on-Shannon are also studying CCTV footage from a number of outlets in an effort to identify the attackers.

Gardaí say the time the man was assaulted is unclear but they believe he may have lain injured at the spot where he was found for some time.

They have appealed for anyone who was in the Townparks area or who believes they may have seen anything suspicious in the area from midnight until 3.30am yesterday to come forward and aid the investigation.

The Garda team is also trying to piece together the victim’s last known movements on Saturday night and into yesterday morning and have appealed for anyone who can assist them in that regard to contact them.
