Gardaí in Co Kildare question man after death of woman at her home

GARDAÍ WERE last night questioning a man about the sudden death of a woman in Co Kildare at the weekend.

The 47-year-old victim was fatally injured at her home on Sunday.

While the results of a postmortem examination did not immediately indicate she had been killed, gardaí are now satisfied she met with foul play and the case has been reclassified as a suspicious death inquiry.

Gardaí were first alerted to the matter late on Sunday morning when a man made an emergency call seeking assistance after the woman had been injured at a house in Naas.

The woman died from her injuries, which gardaí believe were sustained at the property.

Her body was taken to Naas General Hospital for a postmortem. That examination was carried out by the State Pathologist, Prof Marie Cassidy.

While the results are not being released for operational reasons, The Irish Times understands that the woman had injuries that have not been attributed to a fall.

Gardaí believe she was involved in an altercation and was assaulted.

The man under arrest last night was known to the woman.

He has had addresses in west Dublin and also in Co Kildare.

Aged in his 40s, he was being detained at Naas Garda station last night under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The house where the woman was injured has been examined by members of the Garda Technical Bureau as part of the investigation into the death.

Gardaí investigating the woman’s death are following a definite line of inquiry and believe the man they were holding in custody in Naas last night has vital information that could help them to solve the case.

The woman had been named locally last night but her name had not been officially released by gardaí.
