Flextronics International, the electronic services provider, has announced it is to close its manufacturing plant in Limerick. The plant, which is situated in the Plassey technological park, employs 370 staff.

The company has two manufacturing outlets in the Republic in Limerick and Cork but in a statement today it said it was consolidating the two facilities.

"All manufacturing will be provided from Cork by the end of September 2002," it said.

The company blamed the decision on "the continued weakness in the Global Electronics Sector."

The company said it expected up to 150 jobs to be retained within the Limerick/Shannon region as part of an existing repair and reverse logistics services currently provided by the company.

It also said: "The majority of the remaining workforce will be offered positions within the Cork facility as part of this consolidation."

Flexitronics had originally employed 500 staff at its Limerick operation but was forced to seek 130 voluntary redundancies in march because of a downturn in the global telecommunications market.

Flextronics employs 70,000 employees in 28 countries worldwide and has its headquarters in Singapore.
