GARDAÍ HAVE being carrying out house-to-house inquiries in west Dublin as part of their investigation into the death of murdered father-of-two Wayne Doherty.
Mr Doherty (32) was shot outside his parents John and Angela’s home in Oakview Way, Hartstown, at about 11.30pm on Saturday night.
Mr Doherty, who worked as a bread delivery man, had no criminal involvement and it is believed that he was shot when he confronted a group of men intent on shooting another local man.
His father John Doherty said he first thought the shots that killed his son were fireworks until he heard screaming from outside.
Mr Doherty said his son had been outside with his brother and sister when a couple of cars pulled into the estate.
He went to investigate and after confronting the gang a shotgun was produced and he was shot in the left-hand side of the body.
Mr Doherty told RTÉ 2FM’s Gerry Ryan Show that his son was still alive after he was shot in the chest at point-blank range.
“I saw my son lying on the ground and another son David trying to assist him,” he recalled.
“He was incoherent, but he was alive at the time.
“I didn’t realise the extent of the injuries.”
Mr Doherty revealed that his son was conscious enough later to give his personal details to gardaí before he died in the Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown.
Mr Doherty said his thoughts while holding his dying son were abut how “senseless” his shooting was.
He also said that he had no words to describe his son’s killers.
“I’m hoping their parents never have to experience the same thing.”
