Family law court opens after €4m refurbishment

Family law court facilities in Dublin were officially reopened after a €4 million refurbishment by Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan last night.

The premises at Dolphin House, East Essex Street, Dublin 2, has been upgraded to include five enlarged courtrooms and additional consultation rooms.

Improved facilities such as a baby changing room, an information screen with daily listings and a new waiting area and reception are included.

District Court judge Gerard Furlong, a member of the court service board, and District Court judge Gerard Furlong said all court users and their families have a right to suitable accommodation and facilities.

"This is particularly so in the case of family law," he said.

"Court facilities and accommodation which respects the privacy and dignity of family law applicants are essential."

Judge Furlong said it was very important that District Court family law cases throughout the country be separated from regular courts lists instead of being heard at the beginning or end of lists.

Mr Lenihan said the refurbishment of Dolphin House ensures that families coming before the courts can do so "in an environment which respects the sensitivity and confidentiality of their business".

He said there is room for improvement in the area of family law, as recommended by Dr Carol Coulter's reports.

"I agree with many of the recommendations and welcome the decision to continue the reporting project," he said.

"I am glad the chief justice has established a committee to consult with the presidents and judges of the courts . . . For my part, I intend to bring the other recommendations forward as quickly as possible."
