Restored woodlands:The restoration of native woodlands in Ireland was celebrated as Coillte presented the results of a four-year EU Life-funded project in Co Mayo this month.

The project involved the removal of exotic species such as conifers and the creation of condition to allow natural regeneration of native trees such as ash and birch on nine woodland sites throughout Ireland. “These are the jewels in the crown of Irish woodlands,” says Pat Neville, ecologist with Coillte. Three of the sites have been designated as demonstration sites for people to visit. These are Clonbur on the Galway/Mayo border, Hazelwood in Co Sligo and Cahir Park in Co Tipperary. See woodlandrestoration.ie for more details, including a free educational DVD on the woodland restoration project.
