Cork talking

A series of lectures and free public talks examining the role of the arts in the life of Cork will continue over the next few weeks. It is five years since the city was a European Capital of Culture, and with the closure of Cork Opera House during the summer months the role of the city’s built arts heritage is also under the spotlight. Those taking part in the series include Aidan Connolly, of New York’s Irish Arts Centre (Wednesday); Cork-born brothers Bob and John Crowley, who have pursued careers in theatre and film-making (September 15th); and cultural analyst Dragan Klaic (September 29th). Culture Night expands

Details of this year’s Culture Night – with the theme of “What Will You See?” – were announced this week, with 20 cities, towns and islands providing a varied programme of free cultural events on September 24th. More than 500,000 people are expected to take part in the events on offer, from Dublin to the Gaeltachts. Among the attractions are a free cultural bus in Sligo, a guided tour of Belvedere House and Gardens, crafts lessons at the National Craft Gallery in Kilkenny, and free cultural trails in Dublin. Rush to Russborough

The Irish Georgian Society is taking bookings for its first post-summer outing, on September 25th, an introductory study day at Russborough House (right), in Co Wicklow. If you want to take part you’ll have the chance to explore the architectural and decorative heritage of the house. Speakers include Lord Decies,
