Eircell’s chief executive today urged the Department of Finance and the Office of the Director of Telecoms Regulation (ODTR) to resolve the outstanding issues concerning the awarding of 3G licences.
Speaking in Dublin today, Mr Stephen Brewer, warned that a final decision on fees and conditions surrounding the awarding of licences is critical for the mobile phone industry in Ireland.
He added that the company - recently purchased by Vodafone - was in favour of mobile virtual network operations (MVNOs).

"This is a concept where new service providers come into the market place through agreements with an existing network operator. They don't build a network. They seek to use ours and are expected to add value in someway. Eircell is supportive of this concept – if and only if – the concept makes commercial sense – for Eircell and for the consumer".
Mr Brewer also welcomed Meteor’s arrival to become thethird mobile operator in the Irish market.
"Competition and choice are two ideals that we continuously work toward within Eircell and rather than fearing increased competition we welcome it," he said.
