Dubliner McKenna to be buried in Trim, Co Meath

ArrangementsMusician Barney McKenna (72), one of the original member of the Dubliners, will be buried in Trim, Co Meath, on Monday.

Mourners will also pay their respects to the banjo player later today when his body lies in repose at Howth, Co Dublin.

It was McKenna’s wish to be buried in Trim where his family came from, Dubliners agent Brian Hand said yesterday.

“He was born in Dublin but the McKennas are originally from Trim and have always had a connection with Trim,” he said. “He had a little hideaway there. That’s where he was going yesterday [Thursday] before he died.”

McKenna died on Thursday after collapsing in the kitchen of his Howth home.

His remains will repose at the Church of The Assumption in Howth, Co Dublin, today from 3pm to 6.30pm and at Heffernan’s Funeral Home, High Street, Trim, tomorrow from 3pm to 7pm.

McKenna will be removed to St Patrick’s Church, Trim, Co Meath, on Monday at noon.

His funeral Mass will take place at 12.30pm on Monday and that will be followed by burial at St Loman’s Cemetery, Trim.

He was predeceased by his Dutch wife Joka. He is survived by his partner Tina, his sister Marie, his brother Seán Óg, also a musician, and his nephews and nieces.

His death comes in the Dubliners’ 50th anniversary year.
