Staff at Dublin's Civic Offices are to be asked to leave their cars at home and take up walking, cycling, or using public transport, under a new workplace travel plan unveiled by the lord mayor of Dublin Eibhilin Byrne today.

The plan, which is supported by the Department of Transport, is aimed at reducing congestion in the city centre, lowering CO2 emissions and encouraging a healthier lifestyle among city council staff - and their visitors - at the Wood Quay offices.

The lord mayor said the plan was in response to "the level of challenges facing us economically and environmentally" while there was "a clear need for personal responsibility and creative thinking".

We all accept that levels of congestion at certain times of the day are not sustainable but the solution cannot be a "one size fits all" response.
