A consultant surgeon whose 39-year-old patient died after a delayed diagnosis of appendicitis and three operations is facing 12 allegations of professional misconduct and/or poor professional performance at a fitness to practise inquiry this morning.
Mr Syed Naqvi carried out three operations on Patient S at Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Ennis in November and December 2008.
The patient, who was pregnant for the 14th time when she first presented with abdominal pain at Ennis hospital in June 2008, was initially wrongly diagnosed with acute cholecystitis, an inflammation of the gallbladder.
She lost her baby through miscarriage due to septicaemia, blood poisoning, on July 15th and her appendicitis was not diagnosed until November 18th. She died on December 10th that year.
The allegations against Mr Naqvi include that he failed to consider any other diagnosis other than cholecystitis when the patient was initially seen, failed to arrange for CT scans or make adequate arrangements for transfusions, and carried out an inappropriate operation on Patient S on December 8th.
