Decision on waste criticised

A DECISION by the four Dublin local authorities to restrict the ability of private companies to collect waste in Dublin city and county has been criticised by the Irish Waste Management Association (IWMA).

The association which said the decision was a "move to remonopolise bin service insisted it would cost householders up to €30 million per year in extra charges.

The decision was also criticised by the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (Ibec) which said it was "disappointed" as the move would "almost entirely" exclude the private sector.

However, the Dublin local authorities need to retain ultimate control over what happens to the region's waste if their proposed Poolbeg incinerator is to be viable.
