Death of journalist Angela Phelan

Journalist Angela Phelan has died following a long illness. She is survived by her children Sue, Tim and David. Her husband Tom Phelan died last December.

From Bandon, Co Cork, she was best known for her social diary in the Irish Independent. She began working as a social diarist for Image magazine in 1984, then edited by Anne Harris, who is now deputy editor of the Sunday Independent. Ms Harris last night described Ms Phelan as "a terrific social diarist" who had "an absolute fascination for social life in Ireland".
