Man wanted for murder in Germany is before Dublin court

A 52-year-old man wanted in Germany in connection with murder charges has been brought before the High Court in Dublin.

On Tuesday Detective Sergeant Sean Fallon told the court he arrested Vyauntas Dunauskis on foot of a European Arrest Warrant issued by the German authorities.

In the warrant seeking his extradition Mr Dunauskis is alleged to have, with an accomplice, killed a man in his apartment in Lübeck by multiple stabs with a knife and a screwdriver. If convicted he could face life imprisonment.

The court heard that Mr Dunauskis, originally from Lithuania, has been living in Ireland for a number of years.

Det Sgt Fallon said he arrested Mr Dunauskis on Tuesday morning at an address at Sli Esker, Ballinasloe, Co Galway and brought him to the local Garda station.

Sgt Fallon said when he read to Mr Dunauskis the details of the charge in the warrant he had replied “I do not kill anyone.” The warrant seeking his extradition had previously been endorsed by the High Court in Dublin.

The matter came before Ms Justice Miriam O’Regan during a vacation sitting of the court. Mr Dunauskis, who was legally represented, did not speak during the brief hearing. No application for bail was made on his behalf.

On Tuesday the judge, after informing Mr Dunauskis of his rights, including his right to an interpreter, remanded him in custody and adjourned the case to the end of this month.
