Girl wins €70,000 from school over broken glass scar

A girl left with a four-inch scar on her arm after a glass panel in a school door smashed has settled her legal action against the school for €70,000.

Kayleigh Doheny will have to undergo laser treatment to reduce the level of scarring after the incident on April 3rd, 2014, the High Court heard.

Kayleigh, now aged 13, of Kingsfurze Avenue, Naas, Co Kildare, had through her mother Karen Doheny sued the board of managment of Mercy Convent primary school, Naas, as a result of the incident.

Conor Maguire SC, for the child, said she was aged just 11 when the incident occurred at the school.

Kayleigh was walking towards a classroom when the door started to suddenly close, he said. She put her hand up to stop the door and the glass shattered.

Injury

Counsel said Kayleigh suffered a cut injury and now has a scar on her left forearm as a result of the incident but did not suffer a nerve injury.

In the proceedings, it was claimed that the school door had been installed allegedly without the appropriate safety glass.

Counsel said the case was before the court for assessment of damages only.

Mr Justice Kevin Cross, who examined the scar, approved the settlement as a good one.
