The Catholic Primate, Dr Sean Brady, has welcomed the fact that "propositions on heads of agreement" have been tabled in the Northern talks. "I hope this will act as a spur to parties to the talks to engage in meaningful discussion and to address seriously the issues which stand in the way of political agreement," he said.

He also said the news that the peace talks had resumed had brought relief to many people who were gripped by fear and terror at the killings of recent weeks.

The Church of Ireland Primate, Dr Robin Eames, broadly welcomed the initiative by the Irish and British governments.

A spokeswoman said he had always been "very keen that something of substance should be offered now".
