Carlow town flooded for fifth day

The River Barrow remains very high today and some streets in Carlow town are waterlogged for a fifth day.

The River Barrow remains very high today and some streets in Carlow town are waterlogged for a fifth day.

The water level rose further overnight and a council spokesman said this morning that “more homes are in danger of being flooded and may have to be evacuated”.

Volunteers from the civil defence and council workers remain on duty providing emergency transport by boat and tractor and trailer through the waterlogged streets.

After touring flooded areas of the town and county last night, local TD and Green Party deputy leader, Mary White  praised the “excellent work” being done by the “courageous and courteous” army, civil defence, local authorities and fire brigade service.

She said they were “doing everything they can to help those affected and to alleviate the impact of the flooding”.
