British Midland is this afternoon trying to ensure a resolution of a 24-hour strike by its ATGWU-represented staff at Dublin Airport.
The industrial action by 80 of the company’s baggage handling and customer service staff - which is not expected to disrupt flights - centres on the size of a gratuity payment offered by the company.
The airline says it intends switching its ground handling services at Dublin to Gatwick Handling International.
British Midland say there will be no layoffs and no alteration to pay and conditions after the transfer. Compensation for the move will be equated on an individual basis depending on length of service with the company.
The strikers believe they have not been offered enough compensation for the move.
British Midland personnel director Ms Jill Nealon said a deal brokered by the Labour Relations Commission, management and union officials had been rejected by the staff.
She added the company remained hopeful of resolving the issue.
