Bord na Móna is to seek a Labour Court recommendation on a staff dispute that led to a two-day work stoppage in the midlands last week.

Some 1,500 workers placed pickets on Bord na Móna supply depots and affected peat harvesting in Laois, Offaly, Westmeath, Kildare, Roscommon and Longford.

The action by members of Siptu, Unite and the TEEU is over a company pay offer that unions say does not live up to the terms agreed at the Labour Court.

The company had offered to pay the 3.5 per cent in two phases, as well as a lump sum of €1,000 to each worker. But the unions have insisted that the increases be reckonable for pension purposes.

A statement issued today by the company said it had engaged in lengthy discussions with the group of unions both locally and with the assistance of the Labour Relations Commission.

The company said it believes the matter should be referred back to the Labour Court "for further investigation and recommendation".

"As per normal practice we would expect that no further industrial action would take place during the course of such a process," it added.
