IT’S A FANTASTIC time of the year to visit a forest

IT’S A FANTASTIC time of the year to visit a forest. Everything will be a bit windblown after the last few days, and Dublin has so many on its doorstep – a real bonus for any capital city.

Tibradden Forest is just 6kms from Rathfarnham, and tomorrow Coillte is holding its annual Forest Family Fun Day from 12noon-4pm.

There’s a huge range of free activities laid on, from den building and archery to conkers and mountain biking. Orienteering – with a quiz – should provide a bit of focused exercise for all the family.

Tree identification information will be supplied. Tibradden has a wide range of trees from Scots pine, Japanese larch to Sitka spruce, oak and beech.

Examples of old pine woods planted in 1910 can still be seen, just ask the Coillte instructors to point the way. Keep an eye out for deer and badgers, wear your wellies and bring a picnic.
