The sixth annual Culture Night takes place next Friday evening in galleries, theatres, museums, historic houses and artists’ studios across the country. This cultural equivalent of an all-you-can-eat buffet is one of the highlights of the year for arts lovers, night owls and people who like free stuff.

This year it’s bigger than ever before. In Dublin 157 venues will open their doors to the masses and waive entrance fees, including Jameson’s Distillery, the neo-classical Casino at Marino and the brand new Little Museum of Dublin on St Stephen’s Green. The Doorway Gallery on North Frederick Street sees Irish Masterchef Nick Munier indulge his other passion for painting, while members of the public can try their hand at life drawing burlesque models, and The Jazzberries will provide music at an open-air shindig at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. As always, Dublin Bus is running complimentary Culture Buses to the different venues.

Across the country a total of 30 towns, cities, counties and even islands are getting in on the act. There’s a paper lantern labyrinth in the courtyard of Cork County Hall, a tango masterclass in Limerick and a ghost trail in Drogheda.

Last year more than 150,000 people attended and organisers expect even larger numbers this time around.
