Not many people realise that one of the biggest menswear stores in Dublin is Frewen Aylward in Dún Laoghaire, which this year celebrated its 50th birthday. Spread over three floors (including a coffee bar) on Lower George’s Street, it covers suiting, casual wear, kids wear and accessories.

In its pre-Christmas sale, there is 20 per cent off nearly all items. A jacket from Without Prejudice, for instance is down to €295 from €395, and Circle of Gentlemen shirts (a Dutch brand) are €130, down from €175.

For many Christmas shoppers, the best thing about Frewen Aylward is the accessories area, with a huge range of affordable gifts for men from socks and nightwear to cufflinks, collar stiffeners and beyond.
