One of the State's best-known sports and fitness clubs, the Spawell Sports and Leisure Centre in Wellington Lane, Templeogue, Dublin, is to be demolished if a planning application currently before South Dublin County Council is successful. The sports centre will not be lost to the people of surrounding areas however as the application also envisages a new centre on site.

Envisaged is the demolition of the existing sports complex, and the construction of a two-storey over-basement sports centre, a 179-bedroom sports hotel comprising four-stories plus penthouse over-basement car-parking and services area.

If approved, there would also be two three-storey staff apartments, relocation of the tennis courts, replacement of golf driving range bay units, revised access and road improvement works on Wellington Lane, surface car-parking, landscaping, and ancillary works. An Environmental Impact Statement was submitted with the application.

The application reflects the growing development of the leisure industry coupled with the acceptance of higher densities in the Greater Dublin area.
