Renovated and remote 1790s farmhouse

West Cork: Skibbereen agent Charles McCarthy is asking €480,000 for a renovated farmhouse on 35 acres in a magnificent setting near Kilcrohane outside Bantry in west Cork.

With the romantic sounding address of Ballyroon Mountain, the three-bedroom house, which has a separate one-bedroom guest cottage, is perched on an elevated site overlooking the bay.

Refurbished by its German owners over the last 20 years, the house enjoys a remote and totally private setting, at the end of a long winding road. "It's almost the last property before Sheep's Head," according to Mr McCarthy, who handles some of the most picturesque property in west Cork.

Dating from the 1790s, the two-storey house is decorated in true cottage-style, with the welcome addition of a large south-facing conservatory. The guest cottage, about 40 ft from the house, is decorated in a similarly cosy style.

There is a large area of lawn around the house but almost half the land has been planted with pine and sitka spruce, with the remainder suitable for grazing. The farm qualifies for an EU subsidy amounting to €4,200 per annum. Ballyroon Mountain is about six miles from the village of Kilcrohane with its shop, church and two pubs.
