Apartment blocks built by Temple Bar Properties have won a staggering 40 design awards - which means that their mostly young professional residents live in interesting buildings with access to both private and public courtyards. There are also less design-led schemes built by private developers.

The art galleries and art facilities in Temple Bar initially won it the nickname of Dublin's Left Bank but thanks to the number of pubs in the area it quickly lost any pretence at bohemian artiness and instead became a magnet for stag parties. Things seem to be settling down however thanks mostly to the combined efforts of Temple Bar Properties and the residents and an effort is being made to entice families into the area during the day for shopping and entertainment. The area is also known for the number and variety of restaurants on its narrow mostly pedestrianised streets but the retail side of the development has never really taken off.

The west end is the last to be developed. Retail units just beginning to be occupied include a bakery and a creche.
