With bin charge changes having an impact in Dublin, it is perhaps time to consider reducing the amount of household waste you send to landfill, thus minimising costs. Linear waste disposal units will take vegetable peelings, kitchen scraps, chicken bones, crusts and more.

The waste is ground into fine particles by the no-blade device which, incidently, is safe for use with septic tanks. The units come in two sizes and normally cost €380 and €508. They are being sold for €225 and €285 at In-House at the Panelling Centre ( in-house.ie) at locations around Ireland. Also on special is a Quooker tap (right) , the latest kitchen must-have, giving instant boiling water on tap without waiting for the kettle to boil. Normally €915, this tap is available to Irish Times readers who present today's column for €799, a reduction of 13 per cent.
