Group opposes Sandyford plan

The newly formed Sandyford Action Group has criticised the Draft Sandyford Framework Plan as a "completely inadequate document".

Formed at a recent meeting of the Stillorgan District Community and Residents Alliance (SDCRA), the action group is campaigning for "the proper development" of Sandyford Industrial Estate, and is calling for a new local area plan to be prepared.

The group says there are major deficiencies in social infrastructure, road network and public transport in the area, and the framework plan "jumps to the conclusion" that this area can sustain "an unprecedented height and density level".

Residents are also concerned that the proposed Sandyford Urban Framework Plan will generate a population "the same size as Dundalk or Drogheda literally on their doorstep".

"In addition to the excessive density proposed, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown planners consider 27 tower block 'landmarks' are necessary to signpost the estate - many of these would be of 24 storeys with further 32-storey buildings," according to the group.

The residents accuse the council of "attempting to railroad particular planning applications under the guise of a non-statutory framework plan".

The group is holding a public meeting in St Raphaela's Secondary School Hall on October 3rd.
