Treasure or tat - let the experts decide

ITS NOT surprising that Antiques Roadshow-style valuation events are immensely popular. People get to have collectible items assessed and valued by experts in return for a nominal fee. The outcome can be a jaw-dropping surprise or cruel disappointment, as viewers of the BBC TV show know.

Tomorrow the concept gets an outing in south Dublin where Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is hosting an Antiques Fair and Valuation Day in Cabinteely House and Gardens. Entry costs just €5, to include valuation of three items by experts from Adam’s, the country’s largest fine-art auctioneers.

If you’re planning to attend, note that while the fair begins at 10am and ends at 6pm, the valuations take place only between 1pm and 5pm. Council spokesman Joe Burns said “the antiques fair is taking place in the house over two floors and if Adam’s valuations cannot take place outdoors we can accommodate it indoors”.

James O’Halloran of Adam’s said while they’d be watching out for “undiscovered treasures” the event was “a great opportunity for people to have smaller pieces such as paintings, silver and china assessed while enjoying a nice day out”.

Cabinteely House (exit the N11 at Cornelscourt) was once home to Joseph McGrath, the founder of the Irish Hospitals Sweepstake.
