Costelloe glitters

CLOTHES LINES:Paul Costelloe's first jewellery collection will make its debut in September. Called the Merrion, it consists of 30 pieces, mostly in silver and crystal, in a cool colour palette of grey, black, and cream with a shot of pink. It's understated, elegant and neatly detailed, the most striking piece a necklace of faceted crystals in the shape of cogwheels. Elsewhere there are a number of pendants with oval, teardrop or cabochon crystals, including one encrusted with pearls, a style repeated through bracelets, dress rings and earrings (for pierced ears only), though there are noticeably no brooches. Each piece, engraved with Costelloe's signature fox logo, has been hallmarked in Dublin. Prices range between €149 and €250, and the collection goes on sale in 25 retail outlets throughout Ireland, including Fields in Dundrum Town Centre and Bernard John in Swords.

Denim for the downturn

Hard times demand tough dressing. Denim is a fabric that has survived recessionary times – it started down the mines in blue jeans, and now it's a high-street staple. In its current collection, Asos has lined up a dozen denim items in rough new rudimentary formats and washes for the fashion-conscious. There are bleached boiler suits, studded and cross-panelled outwear, including a cool jacket with studded lapels, shorts with chain-mail inserts and "power shoulder" waistcoats. Maybe it's the new proletarian look, but there's a bite to it – some of the jeans are washed in acid, then ripped and repaired. Pity those who have to make them. www.asos.com

Beuy the way

It’s getting known as 99B – Rathgar Road’s latest chic boutique, Beuys Beuys, which opened in July, adding a sophisticated new touch to the clutch of shops in the area. Proprietors Mark and Fiona Cummins are well known agents for a number of classy foreign labels, most particularly Gróa, a hip Danish brand boasting interesting design, beautiful materials and detailed finish. The pair have also sourced some lovely maxi dresses with Swarovski crystal straps from Zoë Boomer, a Belfast designer based in London who also makes beautiful buckled belts from vintage fabrics, and whose fans include Kate Moss and Agyness Deyn. Come September, however, they will be introducing Margaret Howell, whose garçonne look and quality fabrics have timeless appeal.
