Cold weather to last through the week with fog and icy patches during Monday commute

Subzero temperatures to last until Tuesday before giving way to rain on Wednesday

The cold, calm weather of recent days is set to last until Tuesday, when it is forecast to be replaced by warmer and more unsettled conditions.

Temperatures reached lows of minus 4 in Co Donegal over the weekend, but Ireland has been spared the cold snap that has seen most of northern Europe enveloped in snow for the last week.

Further freezing conditions were expected on Sunday night, and Monday will start out with frost and icy patches for many. Monday night could see snow showers in northern areas with lowest temperatures of minus 3 degrees in the western side of the country.

Tuesday will see the last of the cold weather and temperatures are due to turn milder from Wednesday, which should see heavy rain in many parts with the possibility of spot flooding.

Thursday will be milder again but still wet. There is the possibility of another storm arriving on Thursday, but currently its track sees it more to the south of Ireland.

Current indications suggest that the rest of the week will continue unsettled with further spells of wet and windy weather.
