Three and a half stories from Miller's extraordinary comic book are woven together in this strikingly designed, jarringly violent noir compendium. Those who haven't seen Robert Rodriguez' best film should by all means rent a copy of the bare-bones DVD, but fans wishing to buy may want to hang on for the rumoured special edition.

THE EDUKATORS ***

Directed by Hans Weingartner. Starring Daniel Brühl, Julia Jentsch, Stipe Erceg, Burghart Klaubner 15A cert

Three young Berlin radicals accidentally kidnap a representative of the boss class. Though somewhat naive, Weingartner's drama is, nonetheless, gripping and asks interesting questions about the difficulty of retaining youthful idealism. None of the plentiful extras from the German DVD makes it onto the English language edition.
