You don’t so much “see” Ontroerend Goed’s sublime and intimate piece of theatre as much as you “do” it. Those who have – in Edinburgh or, more recently, in Kilkenny – tend to share their experiences liked a guarded secret, partly to avoid spoiling the surprise it holds for future visitors, partly because you feel special (if not slightly smug) for having had the experience.

For some people, however, the performance contract of The Smile Off Your Faceis an immediate deal-breaker: you sit in a wheelchair, wear a blindfold and have your wrists lightly bound together, which is neither as intimidating nor as kinky as it sounds.

The first of three intimate productions that the Belgian company are bringing to the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival ( Internaland A Game of Youare the others), Smilemay be its most gentle, a show that tickles the senses and excites the mind, delights and unsettles, and stays in the memory like a gift: a performance that's just for you.
