Barroco

THE FAMILIAR tempo of Dave Brubeck’s Take 5 is spinning on the turntable, the drummer is in place and the dance begins. This collaboration and dialogue from Association Woo is sublimely clear, elegant and celebratory. Master dancer Dominique Duszynksi creates fine triangular shapes which underline the exuberant but intensely attuned syncopation between the three performers of Barrocco. Duszynski and partner, Ennio Sammarco lean into the pace of the music, slowly and fluidly. Their limbs and bodies fold and roll, arms sweeping, curving and extending, drawing into each other, embracing us too. Fluent movements spill all over us but there is stillness too as the dancers pause, holding a pattern as the jazzy riff repeats and delves behind the notes. They finely counterpoint each other, the structure and the rhythms, with precise duets, as musician and third partner Josselin Varengo re-shapes and frees up the original with guitar and a carnival of percussive sound.
