Oh, the stories Squeeze could tell about me and the girl from Clapham, and how we never thought it would happen on a windy common on that night we ain’t forgotten. And so on.

People, there are some pop groups that are so innately brilliant it’s a wonder they haven’t been give the freedom of the world, let alone Deptford, southeast London. Squeeze have been around

for more than 35 years as a working unit, and, yes, their glory days as a chart band are far behind them, but just look at the treasure trove of class pop songs they have in their back catalogue: from Goodbye Girl, Cool for Cats and Up the Junction to Another Nail in My Heart, Tempted and Labelled With Love, the band (notably, the core songwriting duo of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook) have chronicled the kind of kitchen-sink dramas and comedies that ring so true it’s funny ha-ha and seriously sad. What to expect? One blinkin’ great song after another.
