You and I might know him as LCD Soundsystem, but he's Mr Smarty Pants, that's who James Murphy is. The American producer (with, clearly, an Irish background somewhere in his dim and distant past) has managed to leapfrog the competition over the past 10 years with a series of singles and albums that began with 2002's not- entirely-true greasy electronic tune, Losing My Edge, and continues with this year's studio offering This Is Happening.

This month's London Sessions, a studio-based "live" album, recorded on the hoof, highlights Murphy's increasing tendency to market himself (wittingly or not) as something of a maverick. Whatever way that particular notion pans out, you can rest assured that Murphy will carry on regardless. As these three consecutive shows prove, he can do what he bloody well wants to and still pull in the punters.
