The opening track Funeral In My Heart poses the telling – if arguably inane – question "Why do all the good things have to die?"

And so from the get-go we know this is no honeymoon Americana, no danger of sweet nothings and hearts racing.

And if we didn’t cop the lyrics, then Gill Landry’s big, vulnerable, world-weary voice, the sweeping organ fills and the deliciously moody border brass leave us in no doubt that these nine country-folk tracks rake over the coals of love gone west, teasing out memory in a measured, blame-free rear mirror.

There are missteps; Emily is clunky at best but Just Like You, Take This Body (with Laura Marling) and Fennario head a series of honest, crafted songs.

As such, this third solo album from the Old Crow Medicine Show multi-instrumentalist is a low-key, slow-burning pleasure.
