Primal Scream

When you think of it, there are very few stone-cold classics drifting about. Even the most lauded records are equal parts killer and filler. When it comes to Primal Scream, you'd have thought they wouldn't have it in them to create a record that not only hit the dance/rock/acid house zeitgeist between the eyes but was a touchstone for future generations of rock acts. And yet, 20 years after its release, Screamadelicastill sounds fresh and very exciting. Innovative? Well, hardly that – Bobby Gillespie was too much in thrall to the sleazier side of The Rolling Stones, too much into digging the past (the cover of The 13th Floor Evelators' Slip Inside This House), and far too much into the druggy slipstream of psychedelia to be anything other than a cipher (filtered through intuitive production by Andrew Weatherall, The Orb and Jimmy Miller).
