Giltwood tables make Pounds 42,000 amid hectic bidding

JAMES ADAMS held its most successful sale of the year on June 26th, when overseas buyers in the room and on the telephone made for some hectic bidding. The top selling lot was a fine pair of giltwood console tables, which were finally knocked down at Pounds 42,000.

An Irish Georgian mirror attributed to the Dublin firm of John & Francis Booker sold for Pounds 23,000 to an Irish private buyer, against the bidding of a London dealer. Far less valuable but oozing with sentimental value was a pair of large bronze urns that had once stood in the old Brown Thomas store on Grafton Street; they fetched Pounds 4,600.

A carved giltwood console table, also from the venerable store, made Pounds 5,000. A pair of early Victorian Strahan bookcases fetched Pounds 7,000, while an Edwardian, painted, satinwood bow-fronted cabinet fetched Pounds 3,800.
