Say hello to KK’s Subtitle

In further encouraging festival news, the first Subtitle European Film Festival will kick off in Kilkenny on Monday. Holly Carey, the festival director, has set out to bring the films that haven’t made it past arthouse cinemas to a wider audience.

“There’s a world of filmmakers across Europe creating films that have delighted audiences across the world with their comedy, tragedy, intelligence and beauty. And we’re bringing some of the best of these films together from across the last decade to Kilkenny in November,” she writes. Rather impressively, the event will screen more than 40 films in just one week.

Among the gems turning up we find Cristian Mingiu’s great 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Susanne Bier’s In a Better World and Tomas Aldredson’s Let the Right One In. Films playing that never received a formal release include Jiri Menzel’s I Served the King of England and Sara Johnsen’s Upperdog.

The inaugural Angela Awards – named for the late Angela Cook, a much-missed supporter of the arts – will celebrate the achievements of actors, directors, writers, composers and cinematographers throughout Europe. The awards will also feature some well-known Irish actors and directors who will be in Kilkenny for the night.
