Up at the Hampton Film Festival (the poshest such event this side of Hoity Toity Town) Susan Sarandon made some colourful remarks about the Pope. Easing her way slowly towards offense, she began by congratulating the pontiff for his stance on the death penalty. Then came the killer blow: “The last one, not this Nazi one we have now.”

Unsurprisingly, Bill Donohue, intemperate spokesman from the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, responded in kind. “Susan Sarandon’s ignorance is wilful,” he thundered. “Those who have hatred in their veins are not interested in the truth.” He demanded an apology, but none has so far been forthcoming from Sue.

Meanwhile, on Piers Morgan’s show, Sean Penn was getting stuck into the Tea Party movement. Discussing Morgan Freeman’s recent comments about “racist” elements in that right-wing fringe, Penn expanded in characteristically semi- coherent style.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt about it. If you ask any representative of the Tea Party, ‘OK, social security, socialist, get rid of it?’ they’re going to get very confused. At the end of the day, there’s a big bubble coming out of their heads, saying, ‘Can we just lynch him?’” I guess that makes sense.
