Earl's silver the highlight of some noble lots

A George III Irish silver gilt, two-handled, vase-shaped cup and cover is among the highlights of James Adam's forthcoming silver and jewellery sale. Made in Dublin by Charles Townsend in 1795, the cup is engraved with the arms of Neil, 3rd Earl of Rosebery.

It was formerly in the collection of the 6th earl and was purchased by the owners at a Sotheby's sale in 1977. It is expected to make £3,000-£5,000 at Adam's next Wednesday.

Other interesting lots in the sale include a handsome pair of Georgian Irish sauceboats, simply decorated and standing on distinctive shell and hoof feet. They were made in Dublin by Thomas Jones in 1778 and carry an estimate of £3,000-£5,000. A charming Georgian Irish provincial tea caddy, made by Samuel Reily of Cork in 1800 has a hinged cover and a star decoration under its keyhole. Its top estimate is £4,000.

There are several good salvers on offer, including a pair of George III Irish ones by Dublin silversmith William Homer. They date from 1768 and have a top estimate of £2,300.

In all, over 250 lots will be auctioned, including plenty of affordable items, such as dessert and table spoons, bon bon dishes and dish rings, condiments, various card and napkin holders and cigarette cases. Some items have estimates as low as £20, but judging by the success of James Adam's last silver sale several months ago, the catalogue estimates are probably a little on the low side.

Those searching for something a little different should seek out lot 95 - a rare Cork republican silver letter opener in the form of a Celtic bird. Made by William Egan, it is dated 1923 and should easily make its estimate of £300-£400.
