THE Taoiseach yesterday had a 20 minute telephone conversation with the British Prime Minister, Mr John Major, during which they discussed the multi party talks, the forthcoming Apprentice Boys' march in Derry and EU presidency issues. A Government spokesman said afterwards the discussion was wide ranging and good.

Mr Bruton and Mr Major agreed that useful progress had been made with the agreement on rules and procedures at the Northern talks, and looked forward to resumed talks in September getting down to substantive issues.

They expressed a desire that priority be given to seeking a local solution in the time available to the Apprentice Boys' parade. After the marching season, intensive efforts would be required to find a wider solution to the general marching question in good time for next year.

They also discussed the Prime Minister's visit to Manchester and the efforts being made to rehabilitate the city after the recent bombing.
