Veteran academician John Coyle, born in 1928, is a representational painter in the classical, academic sense. He tackles several traditional genres, including the figure, the landscape (in his case the urban landscape) and the still life, all with what might be described as a relaxed rigour. That is, there’s a strong feeling of order and structure to his compositions, and a casual quality to his imagery.

Coyle’s subject matter includes his studio and home in Clarinda Park, Dún Laoghaire, the views from his studio window and nearby locations.

It all amounts to a peaceful, unhurried environment. Each painting is an exercise in looking. Coyle is sensitive to the nuances of light and colour, to minor seasonal shifts of atmosphere. It’s surprising that his first solo show in many years is in the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, but it’s not at all out of place.
