The Material Consequence

It’s not the most likely location for a gallery of cutting-edge contemporary art, and the post-boom recession is not the most likely time to open one, but the Bluewall in Co Cavan has managed to sustain an ambitious, innovative programme of exhibitions operating within both those constraints. The latest offering is this four-person show curated by Cliodhna Shaffrey. The premise is that the four quite distinctive artists “share an interest in materiality”. That is, each has “a commitment to ongoing exploration of materials”.

Cliona Harmey’s video, photography and sound pieces are largely “about the process of recording” and transmitting images. Felicity Clear’s works on paper (including Winter City Detail, above) address “social and architectural space”.

Isabel Nolan’s work “attests to the pleasure she takes in using a variety of materials” from painting to film animation, embroidery and fabric wall hangings.

Helen Hughes takes mass-produced products and “transforms and reassembles them”, looking for “the blind spots of systems”.
