Richard Mosse has just been named as the artist who will represent Ireland at the 55th Venice Art Biennale next summer. The commissioner/ curator is Anna O’Sullivan, director of Kilkeny’s Butler Gallery. Though he completed an MFA in photography at Yale (in 2008) and is based in New York, Mosse is Kilkenny-born. He and O’Sullivan have said they’ll deliver a further instalment and a new development of his Infra project. If you haven’t come across it already, check it out in Cobh.

Mosse depicts the troubled, conflicted landscape and people of eastern Congo using a discontinued infrared film developed for surveillance purposes. It produces disorientating colour distortions, bathing everything with an otherworldly violet glow.

For Venice, he will develop an eight-channel multi-media installation employing the same film.
