Hughie O’Donoghue has strong links with north Mayo: his mother’s family is from Erris, he spent many summer holidays there growing up, he is partly based there – and he is fascinated by the place. All of which makes O’Donoghue an ideal candidate to inaugurate the revamped gallery that forms part of the ambitiously expanded Ballina Arts Centre.

North Mayo Retrospectfeatures 14 works by O'Donoghue relating directly to the area, including Imma's Tawnanasoonand four carborundum prints (he is a superb printmaker as well as painter), which will be for sale.

In his work, O’Donoghue explores ideas of place and identity in relation to historical and personal meaning, in works that are profoundly in touch with the practical realities of everyday life and experience. Here, beside the brimming River Moy in the heart of Ballina, is a great place to see the work.
