Bold conceptual leaps

The Algerian/French artist Philippe Parreno is a resourceful, influential figure, one of a generation who emerged in the 1990s and transcended conventional ideas of the role and methods of “the artist”.

Parreno, for example, has engaged in many collaborative creative projects, has written a great deal, has taken on a curatorial role, had drawn

on a huge number of sources and disciplines and used them by means of reference, appropriation, emendation and reinvention.

The work he is probably best known for is a case is point: the documentary feature Zidane, a 21st Century Portrait,

devised and directed by Parreno and Scottish artist Douglas Gordon. It’s a compelling documentary that follows the formidable French footballer throughout the course of a single game. It was, as it happens, inspired by a remarkable 1970 film that adopted the same approach – with George Best.

As Parreno works from a conceptual standpoint,

you never know what he is going to do next, or what form it might take. For November, he reconfigures a number of past projects.
