Isabel Nolan has emerged as one of the most important young Irish artists of the past decade thanks to her work, which is often about hesitancy, doubt and uncertainty. A hole into the future is her first solo museum show, which will travel on to the Musée d’Art Moderne de Saint-Étienne Métropole in France.

The title derives from Roadside Picnic, a sci-fi novel by the Strugatsky brothers, the inspiration for Tarkovsky's cult film Stalker. In the book, a brief extraterrestrial visitation has created a mysterious zone, replete with obscure objects. For Nolan, these perplexing objects are akin to works of art "having an intense unknowability, making a careful withdrawal of enacting a stubborn indifference to the warmth and pain with which you meet them."

The Model has also commissioned a new work from the artist, which will be on long-term display in the grounds of the gallery.
