MORE THAN 100 jobs have been created in the grocery retail sector in Dublin following the opening of new stores by Superquinn and Centra.

Some 70 positions have been added at Superquinn’s new 13,000sq ft supermarket in Rathgar, which opened this weekend, while the opening of a 6,000sq ft Centra store at the Regency Hotel on the Swords Road has resulted in the initial creation of 40 jobs.

The Rathgar outlet is the second Superquinn store to open in recent months following the opening of a store at Dublin’s Heuston Station and takes its chain to 25 stores.

The company, which is chaired by Simon Burke and owned by the consortium Select Retail Holdings, recently appointed former Dunnes Stores director Andrew Street as chief executive. Mr Street took up his role at the start of the month.

Regency Centra, part of the McGettigan group, said it had invested €850,000 in its Swords Road store.

The company added that the number of retail positions on the site would eventually increase to 70. More than 470 convenience stores operate under the Centra name across Ireland.
