Interxion wins €1m contracts for Dublin plant

Data hosting and internet exchange company Interxion has won over €1 million (£788,000) in contracts for its Dublin facility. The 14,000 sq ft Park West hosting centre will handle data and manage services for Aircraft Management Technologies (AMT) and international carrier Teleglobe, a newcomer to the Republic.

Mr Tom Cahill, managing director of Interxion Dublin, said companies were migrating to data centres because outsourcing complex network management resulted in savings of 20 to 70 per cent annually. "We can plan capacity better than they can, because we're better at it," he said.

AMT, a Dublin-based provider of aviation software products, will move its entire operation - computer servers, support infrastructure, telecommunications and internet connectivity - to Interxion. AMT produces an electronic version of aircraft technical logs.

The company's software allows pilots, cabin crew and ground engineers to enter operations and maintenance information electronically, which is then transmitted to a Web-based computer server located at Interxion.

The addition of Teleglobe brings to eight the total number of carriers at the Park West facility, making Interxion Ireland the largest carrier-neutral data centre in Ireland. Its Dublin partners include IBM.

Interxion hosts the Irish internet "backbone" or core internet exchange infrastructure for Teleglobe, as well as Ebone, which has replaced UUNet as Europe's largest internet carrier.

Teleglobe carries about 11 per cent of European data traffic.

Europe-based Interxion, which has facilities in 12 countries, is now the largest carrier-neutral data hosting facility in Europe. Many European carriers including Eircom and Esat also operate their own data hosting facilities.
